The three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, is a fish native to most inland coastal waters north of 30°N. It displays elaborate breeding behavior in defending a territory, building a nest and taking care of the eggs. The male courts females with a zigzag dance. In mating season the male develops a crimson belly and throat and his eyes turn an iridescent blue-green. We call him our Little Hero.
